Letter | Gratitude for those who protest injustice

An expression of gratitude is rarely given to those who gather and protest injustice. It’s usually seen as just another news event that doesn’t mean much. But it does mean something vital for life and democracy. Students and others take the time and effort to organize and show solidarity for peace and justice. Demonstrators are showing compassion for victims, and they teach others the origin of conflict. These actions ought never be condemned. Besides, where would we be if there were no civil rights movement or sanctioning South Africa to end apartheid? Or, hopefully Israel’s apartheid policies ?

And then we all should have learned by now you can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake. So, thank you activists, we need you now more than ever.

— Richard Anderson, Santa Cruz

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 175 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at www.santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
