Letter | Celebrations: Time to move beyond fireworks

I commend the recent Letter to the Editor that rightly criticizes the use of fireworks to “celebrate” a significant event, specifically the outdated fireworks display marking the 100th anniversary of the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. How antiquated; how juvenile; how disconnected from the more sophisticated and captivating displays offered by eco-friendly and modern technologies like drone light shows.

One crucial point that escaped mention, but deeply troubles me, is the impact of fireworks on our pets. The legal endorsement of fireworks often fosters a “if they can, so can I!” mindset. Those who haven’t progressed beyond the thrill of a shotgun blast or setting off an M-80 next door should be isolated by society, if not fined for illegal fireworks.

With all due respect to Francis Scott Key, those who still find delight in the sound and visual spectacle of a brocade of sparklies in the sky need to evolve. This isn’t 1814. It’s time to move beyond the military origins of fireworks. It’s time to grow up. It’s time for more peaceful and powerful celebrations.

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 175 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at www.santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
