AIDS/LifeCycle participants pedal along Escalona Drive in Santa Cruz Sunday afternoon heading to Harvey West Park after riding 82 miles down Highway 1 from San Francisco. On Monday morning, the group of more than 2,000 cyclists left Santa Cruz for the 109-mile ride to King City. The cyclists are on a 7-day cycling odyssey from San Francisco to Santa Monica to spread awareness about AIDS and raise money for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center. This year will be the final installment of the ride, which began in 1994 as the California AIDS Ride and was rebranded in 2002 as AIDS/LifeCycle. Organizers say it is ending due to a combination of factors, primarily rising production costs and declining fundraising revenue. (Shmuel Thaler – Santa Cruz Sentinel)
