WATSONVILLE — A section of Highway 1 near the Buena Vista Drive exit is slated to reopen to traffic Monday evening after crews managed to repair a sinkhole that was discovered along the busy transportation corridor over the weekend.
Caltrans announced around 2:14 p.m. Monday that the left southbound lane of the highway would reopen by 6 p.m. The waiting period is required because after crews excavated the area around the sinkhole, they filled it with roadway materials that need a few hours extra hours to dry.
Travelers moving along southbound Highway 1 during afternoon commute hours should anticipate heavier-than-usual travel times, Caltrans advised.
The lane was shuttered about a half-mile north of Watsonville starting Sunday morning, shortly after the hole was discovered just a few inches from the outer edge of the left lane that is marked with yellow paint.
