Fausto Gonzales leads Harbor past Yerba Buena | High school football

SAN JOSE — Senior running back Fausto Gonzales rushed for 201 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and the Harbor High football team beat host Yerba Buena 27-18 in nonleague action Thursday night.

Gonzales and fellow senior running backs David Quintanilla and Nico Edler combined for 238 yards rushing.

The contest was originally slated to take place Friday, but it was moved up a day due to the shortage of game officials in the area.

“I’m really proud of our guys for how they fought and battled tonight,” said James Gaynor Jr., the Pirates’ head coach. “We were down seven starters and the biggest challenge was the mental aspect with it being a short week and their heavy motion passing offense. It was a great team win and we’re looking forward to reviewing the film and getting better next week.”

Quarterbacks Luke Griffin and Andres Mendoza each saw action for the Pirates. Griffin had a 4-yard rushing touchdown, and Mendoza threw a touchdown pass to  junior receiver Jacob Williams.

Senior defensive back Jack Espinoza had an interception, sack and a forced fumble.

Harbor (1-1) returns to action Sept. 19, when it hosts St. Francis in its final nonleague game at 7:30 p.m.
