CAPITOLA — A 51-year-old Watsonville man suffered major injuries Sunday morning when he crashed his pickup into a Highway 1 median guardrail and construction barrier and was knocked unconscious in the solo crash.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash shortly after 11:30 a.m. near the northbound Park Avenue exit. The agency continued to investigate why the driver, operating a 2004 Dodge Durango, swerved off the road and into the median, according to a release. After hitting the metal rail, the truck entered a highway construction area, pushing a temporary barrier into the northbound lane and an oncoming vehicle before coming to rest in the dirt median.

A passing motorist who stopped to assist the driver began giving the man CPR when he found him unconscious, according to the CHP. Emergency responders took over medical response and transported the injured driver to a local hospital, where authorities say the driver is expected to make a full recovery.

There were no injuries to passengers in the second vehicle involved in the crash, according to the CHP.
