Scotts Valley’s Kaleb Wing, Brock Ketelsen to compete in prestigious Area Code Games baseball showcase | Local Roundup

Scotts Valley’s Kaleb Wing and Brock Ketelsen have been chosen to compete in the prestigious Area Code Games baseball showcase at Blair Field in Long Beach on Aug. 8-13.

Wing and Brock Ketelsen will compete for the A’s, one of eight regional teams in the five-day showcase. Scouts from all 30 MLB teams as well as coaches from top NCAA programs will be in attendance, evaluating the talent assembled from across the nation.

The A’s will face the Brewers on Aug. 9 at 5 p.m., Nationals on Aug. 10 at 8 a.m., Rangers on Aug. 11 at 1p.m., Reds on Aug. 12 at 6 p.m., and White Sox on Aug. 13 at 8 a.m.

Wing, a 6-foot-2 shortstop committed to Loyola Marymount University, was all-Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League honorable mention selection in 2024. Ketelsen, a 6-4 left-handed pitcher and outfielder who competes for Valley Christian in San Jose and is committed to Stanford University, was an all-West Catholic Athletic League second-team selection.

Tryouts for the A’s squad took place at Islanders Field in Lathrop on June 30.

Running

Sunset Tour: Aptos native Nikki Hiltz, the 2024 Olympic Trials 1,500-meter champion, competed in two events in Sound Running’s Sunset Tour in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Hiltz, who is sponsored by Lululemon, took first place in the 800 in 1 minute, 59.42 seconds, and third in the 1,500 in 4:04.27 at Occidental College’s Jack Kemp Stadium. Hiltz finished behind Adidas’ Whittni Morgan (4:02.59) and Nike’s Karissa Schweizer (4:02.79) in the 1,500.

It was Hiltz’s final competition ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Beach volleyball

No Attitudes: Santa Cruz’s Jamie Bloom and Elliot Smith won the teen division at the No Attitudes tournament at Main Beach in Santa Cruz on Saturday.

Other division winners include: Santa Cruz’s Harshal Deshmukh and Belmont’s Hilda Herceg (coed novice), Salinas’ Deanna Basso and Valente Espinoso (coed intermediate), Belmont’s James Herceg and Jake Wehrle (men’s), and San Francisco’s Whitney Eden, Rudy Silva, Kim Lee, and Robert Chen (four-person team).
