All nine Cardinals scored at least once in Santa Cruz High’s 13-8 win over visiting Soquel in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League baseball game Friday.
Santa Cruz scored seven runs in the second inning, led 11-3 after three, and 13-3 after six. Soquel, coming off a 9-7 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday, committed five errors.
Fernando Dacosta had three hits and scored three runs for the Cardinals (8-8, 6-3). Matteo Caltabiano had two hits, two RBI, and scored twice. Emmet Desmond had a home run, two RBI, walk, and scored twice. Cameron Fusari had two hits, three RBI, and scored a run. Nick Bogomilsky had two hits, including a triple, RBI, and run scored, and Kaden Smith had a home run and two RBI.
Gabe Virgallito had three hits, including a double and home run, four RBI, and scored twice for the Knights (12-5, 6-3). Jake Escalante had two hits and scored twice. Brady Downs and Noah Piona each had a hit and two RBI. Downs also drew a walk and scored a run. Hudson Summerrill scored twice.
Santa Cruz plays at Half Moon Bay on Saturday at 11 a.m. On Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., Soquel hosts Aptos, and Santa Cruz plays at Scotts Valley.
Harbor 8, at Scotts Valley 7, 9 inn.: The Pirates’ Jake Fiorenza drove in Liam Nunes with the game winning run in the ninth inning of the teams’ SCCAL game Friday.
Fiorenza finished with three hits, two stolen bases, and two RBI, and a run scored for the Pirates (10-8, 3-6).
Carlos Cruz reached base four times for Harbor. He had two hits, including a double, was hit by pitch, drew a walk, drove in a run, and scored twice. Ferris Vitali had three hits and two RBI ,and Cole McCombs had a pair of hits.
Naiche Fish threw three innings of relief and earned the win. He gave up two hits and struck out four batters.
Jacob Pauka had two hits, including a home run, three RBI, for the Falcons. Blake LaRiviere also homered and scored twice. Kaleb Wing and Quinn Turowski each had two hits and one run scored. Wing also drove in a run.
On Tuesday, Harbor plays at San Lorenzo Valley, and Scotts Valley hosts Santa Cruz.
Aptos 6, at SLV 6, 11 inn.: The Mariners and host Cougars played to a tie in 11 innings in SCCAL play Friday.
Jason Yager started for Aptos and went four innings, freshman Cole McGillicuddy pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings, Eddie Peters threw 1 2/3 innings, and Isaiah Work pitched two scoreless innings.
On offense, Peters had two hits, including a home run, and scored twice. Jack Reed had two hits, including an RBI double, and freshman Alec Mendoza hit a two-run single.
John Clinkenbeard had two hits and three RBI for the Cougars. Cody Houston and Anthony Griffiths each had two hits, and Jaden Shabry had a hit, one RBI, and scored twice.
Aptos (9-5-1, 7-1-1) hosts Los Altos on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Women’s wrestling
USA Olympic wrestling trials: Santa Cruz’s Maya Letona, the No. 5 seed, dropped an 8-2 decision to No. 4 Ashlynn Ortega in the first round of the 62 kg freestyle tournament at the USA Olympic wrestling trials in in State College, Pennsylvania, on Friday.
Scotts Valley’s Dominique Parrish awaits the Challenge final winner in the best-of-three championship at 53 kg.
College softball
At Cabrillo 8, Shasta 4: Kasydi Bennett had a walk, two hits, one RBI, and scored twice, and the Seahawks won the opening game of their doubleheader Friday.
Brooklyn Llamas had a walk, two hits, and two RBI for the Seahawks (27-9). Alicia Mendez had a hit, two RBI, and two runs scored. Bella Fromel had a walk, hit, and scored twice, and Dillyn Vasconcellos had two hits and one RBI.
Ada Neu pitched three innings before giving way to Mendez and earned the win. Cora Peterson gave up eight runs, four earned, in her complete-game loss.
At Cabrillo 10, Shasta 5: Abreanna Alba had two hits, including a double, five RBI, and scored a run to help the Seahawks complete their nonconference doubleheader sweep Friday.
Aaliyah Gomez had two hits, including a triple, and scored twice. Dillyn Vasconcellos had two hits, two stolen bases, one RBI, and a run scored. Alicia Mendez had a hit, two RBI, and a run scored. Bella Fromel had a walk, hit, and scored twice, and Kasydi Bennett had two walks, two stolen bases, one RBI, and a run scored.
Victoria Sierra scattered eight hits and three walks in her complete-game win. Only two of the runs she allowed were earned. Morgan Bourke pitched two innings and took the loss.
Cabrillo (27-10, 8-5) closes the regular season against visiting West Valley (28-7, 10-3) on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Beach volleyball
At Harbor 5, Scotts Valley 0: Gwen Grigsby celebrated her birthday by teaming with Isla Johnson for a 21-6, 21-10 win over Grace Emanuelson and Hayden Smith in the Pirates’ SCCAL win over the Falcons on Friday.
In other matches, Maren O’Farrell and Sabine Kemos beat Natalia Cash and Bella Alvarez 21-8, 21-7; Grace Stryker and Tea Stockwell beat Lunden Maeda and Paige Bariteau 21-11, 21-6; Liberty Niesen and Dylan Schutz beat Aila Papopoulos and Dylan Wing 23-25, 21-17, 15-9; and Anika Dawson and Zoe Kemos beat Emma Howell and Ava Dumnesy: 21-14, 21-15.
Harbor (6-0, 5-0) wraps up the regular season on Wednesday at home against Soquel at 4 p.m.
Girls swimming
At Santa Cruz 103, Scotts Valley 10: Renata Nobile-Orozco and Tessa Jeffries each earned two individual wins to pace the Cardinals in their SCCAL meet win Friday.
Nobile-Orozco took first in the 100 backstroke (1.09.25) and 200 free (2:11.25), and Jeffries took first in the 100 butterfly (1:11.28) and 200 IM (2:33.28).
Santa Cruz’s Vanessa Marroquin took first in the 50 freestyle (27.59) and teammate Guilia D’Souza took first in the 100 free (1.04.63).
Nobile-Orozco, Amelie Lindberg, Jeffries, and Marroquin took first in the 200 free relay (1:58.34), Marroquin, Malia Cooper, Jeffries, and Nobile-Orozco took first in the 200 medley relay (2.08:94), and D’Souza, Chloe Biagini, Lindberg, and Pippa Davis took first in the 400 free relay (4.44.93).
Scotts Valley’s Annika Kiesby took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.83).
Soquel 127, SLV 12: Makayla Hansen, Kayla Matthies, and Hazel Wilson each earned two individual wins in the Knights’ SCCAL meet win Friday.
Hansen took first in the 100 back (1:12.97) and 200 IM (2:39.90), Matthies took first in the 100 fly (1:07.47) and 500 free (6:13.45), and Wilson took first in the 100 free (59.85) and 200 free (2:11.35).
Autumn Anstey (50 free, 26.90) and Izzie Bridi Milligan (100 breast, 1:18.50) also earned wins for the Knights.
Wilson, Anstey, Bridi Milligan, and Matthies teamed for first in the 200 free relay (1:47.70), and Matthies, Bridi Milligan, Anstey, and Wilson took first in the 200 medley relay (2:07.52).
Boys swimming
At Santa Cruz 90, Scotts Valley 0: Tate Wilson and Elijah Smuga-Otto each earned two individual wins in the Cardinals’ SCCAL meet win Friday.
Wilson took first in the 50 free (25.34) and 100 fly (1:07.22), and Smuga-Otto took first in the 100 breast (1:15.03) and 200 IM (2.28:85).
Hayden Johnson (100 free, 57.22), Robert Murphy (200 free, 2.13.12), and Beckett Owen (100 back, 1:11.01) also earned wins for the Cardinals.
Owen, Smuga-Otto, Wilson, and Grant Atkinson took first in the 200 medley relay (2:01.81), Carson Grant, Judah Mulder, Murphy, and Xavier Hunter took first in the 200 free relay (1:53.06), and Wilson, Johnson, Atkinson, and Mau Mau Liang took first in the 400 free relay (3:57.66).
Soquel 100, SLV 16: Justin Amaral and Oliver Santana each earned two individual victories in the Knights’ SCCAL meet win Friday.
Amaral took first in the 50 free (24.53) and 100 breast (1:06.71), and Santana took first in the 100 fly (52.83) and 100 back (56.81).
Austin Bar (200 free, 2:08.54), Mateo Paiva (200 IM, 2:24.25), Hayes Pizzica (100 free, 56.09), and Mark Hanson (500 free, 6:09.39) also earned wins for the Knights.
Santana, Amaral, Paiva, and Pizzica teamed for first in the 200 medley relay (1:49.19), and Santana, Pizzica, Jacob Henshaw, and Amaral took first in the 200 free relay (1:34.99 ).
High school softball
Soledad 6, at MVC 2: Ava Alvarado had three hits, including a pair of doubles, one RBI, and a run scored for the Mustangs in their nonleague loss Friday.
Kayla Fullalove-Silveira had two hits for MVC (8-8), including a double.
Mae Martin struck out seven batters in her complete-game loss.
Boys golf
Aptos 199, at Harbor 244: Medalist Tyler Grosdidier shot even-par 34 to lead the Mariners to the SCCAL win on the front nine at DeLaveaga Golf Course on Thursday.
Shawn Roschelle (40), Ben Nowark (40), Andrew Cox (42) and Luke Garvey (43) also scored for the Mariners.
Kaden Dunton (36), Kyler Samples (48), Kaito Levy (49), Matthew Salas (52), Brody Yappert (59) scored for the Pirates.
