The upper floors of the McHenry Library at UC Santa Cruz tower above a student heading to study for finals. The original McHenry Library was designed in 1968 by John Carl Warnecke and was as an important feature at the campus center and is a lasting icon. To accommodate growth, bring the library into the 21st century, and provide seismic retrofits, the building was expanded and renovated in 2011 to add over 120,000 square feet of space. The library was named at UCSC’s first chancellor, Dean E. McHenry, who was appointed to the post in 1961, more than four years before the campus opened its doors to the first class of 650 students. He served for 13 years before retiring in 1974 but remained an active member of the UCSC community until his death in 1998. His vision, integrity and deep commitment to higher education played an essential role in the successful development of the campus. Other than standard library holdings, the McHenry Library houses collections in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Special Collections and Archives, and the Grateful Dead Archive.
