Letter | A plea to save the Nickelodeon theater

Save the Nick.

Our little movie theater has been closed since COVID. The original owners were Bill Raney and his first wife, JoAnne Walker Raney, started it in 1969 and specialized in art house movies. A producer friend and alumnus of UCSC has a retirement idea of showing old films with talks, a popular idea in a few small theaters in LA and San Francisco. They also serve good food, which sparked my interest.

It is now part of the Landmark chain that just went bankrupt. We have been in discussion with the Arts Department at UCSC to partner with them in running it.

I have reached out to the few multimillionaires I know who might want their name on the building and who might need a large tax deduction. A commercial Realtor has pegged the property at $2.5 million. They all like the idea but describe themselves as “over committed.” Rich folks tend to get a lot of requests.

If you have a few million sitting around and you like the idea contact me.

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 175 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at www.santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
