A friend asks me why I haven’t gone to any protests against Israel. He knows that I don’t approve of its violence at the moment; that I view the war as nationalism gone so far awry that it is an impediment to human life. He may know that I rode a bicycle through Israel and Gaza and the West Bank and have a love for both peoples.
I am not going to the protests because they are full of Palestinian flags and declarations of loyalty to the nation of Palestine. To me it seems that both Israel and Hamas (the elected government of Gaza) have put their right to have a “nation” above the rights of human beings.
The only flag that I will fly right now is a flag for peace.

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 175 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at www.santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
