Prefontaine Classic: Aptos native Nikki Hiltz took fifth place in the women’s 1,500-meter race at the Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday.

Hiltz, who identifies as transgender and nonbinary, finished in a season-best 3:59.64.

“I’m happy,” said Hiltz, in a post-race interview with Citius Mag. “I hit my goal, I competed well, second American, and broke 4, so I can’t complain.”

Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji won the race in a personal-best 3:53.75.

“I’ve been waiting for this race for a long time,” said Welteji, in her post-race interview. “I was just hoping to run a good time, but I’m really happy with how the race turned out. Training has just been going much better as of recently. It’s taken a little while to get to this time, but now everything’s good.”

Jessica Hull took second in an Australian record and personal-best 3:55.97. American Elle St. Pierre took third in a personal-best 3:56.00, and Great Britain’s Laura Muir took fourth in a season-best 3:56.35.

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials take place at Hayward Field on June 21-30.

“I think from here on out it’s how do we shift off of 64 (seconds) pace,” said Hiltz, of working with coach Mike Smith. “And how do you get those gears the last 100? My splits were probably really even today, which I’m happy with, but I think for the Trials I want my gears back.”
