Monte Vista Christian School’s softball team finished in sixth place in the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s Mission Division. That said, it didn’t take much of a pitch from Mustangs coach Gerry Vargas to get star senior Kayla Fullalove-Silveira recognized with special honors during all-league voting.
As one opposing division coach put it: “The only player I feared pitching to was Kayla.”
Fullalove-Silveira, a senior corner infielder who is committed to play next season at 2025 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular-season champion University of Bridgeport, was voted the Mission Division’s Offensive Player of the Year.
Fullalove-Silveira was a force at the plate. Not just this season, but her entire career. She batted .659 (54 for 82) as a sophomore and .653 (49 for 75) as a junior, when she finished second in Player of the Year voting.
“She put up video game numbers,” Vargas said.
She batted .639 (53 for 83) with 27 extra-base hits this season, including 10 home runs, which tied Monterey’s Denae Lee for the highest total in the Central Coast Section, according to statistics published on maxpreps.com. She drew 19 walks and struck out just seven times.
“It was incredible,” Vargas said. “She would hit anything. Inside, outside, low … she could do it all.”
Vargas said Fullalove-Silveira was a tireless worker. Good game or not — mostly great — she often stayed after practice to get in extra work.
Fullalove-Silveira also scored 53 runs and had 46 RBI for the Mustangs (13-14, 5-11). She finished with a .706 on-base percentage, 1.217 slugging percentage, and 1.923 on-base plus slugging percentage.
Vargas said Fullalove-Silveira also shined on the base paths and playing defense.
“She leaves some really big shoes to fill,” he said.
Alisal senior Jasmine Estrada was named Defensive Player of the Year for the second-place Trojans (18-8, 13-3).
Pacific Grove junior Alex Giammanco was named Pitcher of the Year for the division-champion Breakers (17-7, 15-1).
Fullalove-Silveira was also the Mustangs’ lone first-team selection.
MVC junior first baseman Samantha Bertoldi was named to the second team.
Gabilan Division
Monterey senior pitcher Ella Myers was named MVP after leading the Toreadores (19-5-1, 11-1) to a share of the PCAL Gabilan Division title with Salinas.
Senior Abi Jones was named Pitcher of the Year for the Cowboys (20-8, 11-1).
Alvarez senior pitcher Dani Amendola was named Player of the Year for the fourth-place Eagles (16-12, 6-6).
Senior Jillian Lerma and sophomore Mia Espinoza, both middle infielders for Watsonville, were named to the second team.
Cypress Division
Gonzales junior Mariana Camarena was named Offensive Player of the Year for the second-place Spartans (11-10, 10-2) in the PCAL Cypress Division.
Greenfield sophomore Chloe Zavala was named Pitcher of the Year after leading the Bruins (14-14, 12-0) to the division title.
Pajaro Valley sophomore Hemeria Delatorre was named Defensive Player of the Year after posting a 0.889 fielding percentage, recording 47 putouts in 54 total chances.
She batted .580 (29 for 50) with 12 extra-base hits, 32 RBI and 32 runs scored. Delatorre was also named to the first team for the fourth-place Grizzlies (7-13, 5-6).
Grizzlies senior Elena Barron was named to the second team.
