Scotts Valley High softball talent Taylor Wilson was named MVP of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League, during a recent vote of league coaches.
It was the third straight season that the junior third baseman has received first-team honors or better.
Wilson batted .508 (31 for 61) with 10 extra-base hits, 20 stolen bases, 25 runs scored, and nine RBI. She helped the Falcons (14-7, 13-2) win the league title and advance to the Central Coast Section playoffs.
Wilson started the season batting leadoff, before moving to the Nos. 2-4 spots in the order.
“I like the way she persevered,” said Jeremy Wilson, the second-year Falcons coach. “She had a couple of rough games, but she kept her head on her shoulders, stayed consistent, and trusted the process. And she really shined on defense. I don’t think that someone had a successful bunt on her until CCS.”
Aptos senior Mileena Carbajal, a first-team selection in 2023 who is committed to play for Indiana Institute of Technology, was named Pitcher of the Year.
Carbajal posted a 1.65 ERA over 59 1/3 innings with 80 strikeouts for the runner-up Mariners (16-7, 12-3). She gave up 45 hits and 24 walks.
Carbajal turned her screwball, one of her weakest pitches, into one over her strengths. She also had a solid curveball, an improved fastball, and threw a changeup.
“She was pretty focused to be the best,” said Phil Rojas, the Mariners’ head coach.
Rojas said Carbajal improved her control, and benefitted from walking less batters.
“She always had confidence,” Rojas said. “It was just a matter of putting everything else together.”
Harbor senior Morgan Devillires, a first-team selection in 2023, was given the Heart & Hustle Award, and Scotts Valley’s Jeremy Wilson was chosen as Coach of the Year by his peers.
Scotts Valley, Aptos, and third-place finisher San Lorenzo Valley — all CCS qualifiers — each had three players named to the first team.
Scotts Valley junior infielder Gracie Delgado made the first team for a third straight season. Junior teammate Sofie Seese, a pitcher who transferred from Soquel and is committed to NCAA DivisionI Georgia State University, was a repeat first-teamer.
Falcons outfielder Chloe Kent was one of three freshmen named to the first team, along with Aptos outfielder Emma Burgueno, and Soquel utility player Emma Niizawa.
Aptos junior infielder Bailey Fulton was named to the first team for a third straight season, and joined by her sister and teammate, Regan, a senior infielder.
SLV senior outfielder Alyssa Struthers, a Concordia University of Irvine commit who earned 2023 SCCAL MVP honors, was honored on the first team or high for a third straight season, and Cougars junior infielder Angie Fulkerson and senior catcher Olivia Renouf also repeated as first-team selections.
