A Pride of Madeira (Echium candicans) flowers on the bluff above the San Lorenzo River mouth as a person makes their way on Main Beach. The plant, which is native to the island of Madeira, is a large herbaceous perennial subshrub, which can grow up to 8-feet in height and typically lives for about 5 years. Though it is commonly used in local landscaping, it is considered invasive – particularly along the central and south coast of California and in the San Francisco Bay region, where it can spread into native plant communities.
