Periods of rain alternated with sunshine in Santa Cruz Monday to provide optimal conditions for rainbows, and multiple prismatic feasts were present locally during the day. Rainbows are caused by the refraction and reflection of sunlight through water droplets and typically occur when the sun is low (less than 42 degrees above the horizon) in the sky.
