LAS LOMAS — A 40-year-old Watsonville resident was killed after being hit by two vehicles while running across a road at approximately 5:29 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Hall Road and Las Lomas Drive.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 46-year-old Salomon Garcia Lobato of Watsonville was driving a white Toyota pickup eastbound on Hall Road toward Las Lomas Drive. The unidentified pedestrian ran across the intersection and was struck from the driver’s side of the Toyota. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led the individual to run from the north to south shoulder of Hall Road.

After the collision, the Toyota pulled over to the side of the road while the pedestrian collapsed onto the eastbound lane of Hall Road. During that time, a gray Ford sedan driven by 78-year-old William John Makel of Santa Cruz was traveling eastbound and struck the victim again after being unable to avoid the collision. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, per the CHP.

Lobato and Makel remained on scene after the crash and cooperated with investigators. The Monterey County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the pedestrian once next of kin have been notified. Neither Lobato nor Makel sustained any injuries in the crash.
