Scotts Valley High’s girls soccer team scored in the second half to earn a 1-1 tie against Monte Vista Christian in the teams’ nonleague match in Watsonville on Monday.
Sophomore winger Caroline Peters gave MVC the lead in the 13th minute, when she finished a pass from junior midfielder Ashley Drago.
Falcons junior forward Ella Ireland scored on a cross from junior outside forward Izzy Morairty to knot the score.
Scotts Valley had a total of 15 shots, multiple by sophomore center mid Lauren Lima, and senior center mid Dillon Fiorita, and one rocket by junior outside defender Mercedes Lopez, which hit the crossbar.
“The girls have improved so much in such little time,” said Falcons coach Taylor Raymond. “It’s tough going into some games with only 10 to 11 players, but they care so much about the sport and the team. It’s fun to watch them grow as a team, even when odds are against us.”
Freshman goalie Charlotte Groves made five saves for MVC.
“I’m incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication of our team,” Mustangs coach JuanDiego Alvarez said. “We’ve played four matches, faced adversity head-on, and consistently risen to the challenge. Their unwavering confidence and commitment are truly inspiring. As their coach, I’m honored to support them every step of the way.”
Scotts Valley (1-1-2) plays at Lynbrook in the Firebird Classic on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
MVC (2-1-1) plays at Christopher (0-1-1) in Gilroy on Thursday at 7 p.m.
NBA G League
Santa Cruz 112, at Rip City 109: Forward Kevin Knox II had 23 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks in the Warriors’ win at the Chiles Center in Portland, Oregon, on Monday night.
Forward Jackson Rowe had 17 points and 13 rebounds to earn his second double-double for the Warriors (6-5).
Two-way guard Reece Beekman had 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Two-way center Quinten Post had 13 points and seven rebounds. Forward Donta Scott came off the bench and contributed with 13 points and six rebounds.
Two-way guard Bryce McGowens scored a game-high 37 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Remix (3-9). Guard James Bouknight had 19 points and five rebounds off the bench, and two-way guard Taze Moore had 13 points, nine rebounds, and five assists in one half of play.
The Warriors play at Stockton (7-3) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Boys soccer
Alvarez 1, at Santa Cruz 0: Goalie Stephen Yee made eight saves in the Cardinals’ nonleague loss Monday.
Jorge Hernandez scored on a pass from Edwin Moreno to help lifts the Eagles (3-0-0), the defending Central Coast Section Division III champion.
“Despite the final result, Santa Cruz played with intensity against the 2023-24 CCS champs,” said Adam Anapolsky, the Cardinals’ head coach.
Santa Cruz (1-2-0) plays at Cupertino (2-2-0) on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Pacific Collegiate 7, at St. Francis 0: Senior Hannibal Dong scored four goals, and the Pumas pulled away with six second-half goals in their nonleague win Monday.
Senior Elan Rizvi-Neuman scored twice for the Pumas, and Ryder Wilder also scored a goal.
Sophomore goalie Atticus Florus made multiple saves to keep a clean sheet.
The Sharks were without Oscar Vargas, Aiden Berrelleza and Vince Tovar, and first-year goalkeeper Brady Stidham, who made six saves, exited with a bloody nose after taking a ball to his face.
“It was definitely a game we will learn from,” Sharks coach Valentin Berrelleza said. “We lost nine seniors from last year. This season we’re in rebuilding mode, with five players who have never played soccer before.”
The Sharks (0-1-0) play at Monterey Bay Academy on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
PCS (1-1-1) plays at at MVC on Monday at 5:45 p.m.
Girls basketball
At Mountain View 66, MVC 28: The Mustangs had trouble slowing the Spartans’ perimeter attack in their nonleague loss Monday.
Sophia Cortes scored 11 points for the Mustangs and Emily Madison scored 10 points.
MVC (1-5) plays at Soquel (2-1) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
