The No. 23 seed Cabrillo College baseball team competed its stunning upset of No. 2 Fresno City in the first round of the CCCAA NorCal Regional playoffs on Friday.
The Seahawks prevailed 11-9 in the Game 3 of the teams’ best-of-three series after falling 10-9 in 11 innings earlier in the day. Cabrillo won 14-11 over the Rams (31-12) in the series opener Friday.
A total of 64 runs were scored in the series, making it a great weekend for batting averages and bad one for earned-run averages.
Seita Shiratori had two hits, one walk, four RBI, three stolen bases, and scored twice in the series clincher. Matt Morrison had a hit, three RBI, and a run scored. Jacob Pappas had two hits, two RBI, and scored a run. Nic Erickson had a hit, one walk, and scored twice. Truett Ross had two hits, one RBI, and a run scored, and Nicholas Madrigal walked and scored twice.
In the Seahawks’ loss, Madrigal had three hits and two RBI. Morrison had two hits, three RBI, and two runs scored. Erickson and Pappas each had two hits, one walk, one RBI, and three runs scored.
The Seahawks (21-21) advance to the double-elimination Super Regionals on Thursday through May 11. The site is TBA.
College softball
At Cabrillo 5, Sacramento City 4: Alicia Mendez singled in Bella Fromel with the go-ahead run to cap the Seahawks’ three-run fourth inning, and they held on to win the opener of their best-of-three NorCal playoffs series Friday.
Game 2 is Saturday at 2 p.m. Game 3, if needed, will be played at 4 p.m.
Fromel had three hits and scored twice. Abreanna Alba had two hits and two RBI, and Mendez had two hits and one RBI. Kasydi Bennett had two hit, one RBI, and scored twice. Ada Neu had two hits and scored a run.
Mendez earned the complete-game win. She gave up 10 hits and four runs, one of which was earned. She struck out four batters.
Girls track and field
PCAL Masters Meet: Watsonville junior Katelynn Ruiz took first in both the 1,600 (5 minutes, 19.68 seconds) and 3,200 (11:15.02) at the 27-team PCAL Masters Meet at Pacific Grove High on Friday.
The top seven finishers in each event qualified for next weekend’s Central Coast Section Semifinals.
St. Francis sophomore Peyton Orradre took fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.69) and fifth in the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches), and MVC junior Kylie Brunelli took fifth in both the 1,600 (5:24.13) and 3,200 (12:01.92).
The Wildcatz took sixth in the 4×400 relay (4:27.60).
Mustangs sophomore Ashley Drago took seventh in the long jump (15-10.5).
Watsonville sophomore Lizbeth Gomez Abrica took seventh in the 1,600 (5:31.26) and junior teammate Jayleen Arredondo took seventh in the pole vault (8-0).
Boys track and field
PCAL Masters Meet: Watsonville senior Giancarlo Mendo took second in the 1,600 (4:26.57) and fourth in the 3,200 (9:55.79), and Pacific Collegiate senior Andre Tse took second in the discus (136-6.5) and fourth in the shot put (44-0) at the 27-team PCAL Masters Meet at Pacific Grove High on Friday.
The top six finishers in each event qualified for next weekend’s CCS Semifinals.
Several other locals posted top-three finishes: Pajaro Valley junior Izaak Ocampo took second in the long jump (20-8.5), MVC junior Joshua Tepoorten took third in the 400 (51.19), Mustangs sophomore Conor Gilliam took third in the 800 (2:01.25), and Watsonville junior Nathaniel Aceves-Aguilar took third in the triple jump (41-8.75). MVC’s Tepoorten, Tracey, Hendricks, and MVC senior Connor Pallott took third in the 4×400 relay (3:37.98).
Watsonville took fourth in both the 4×400 relay (3:38.11) and 4×800 (8:52.72).
Watsonville senior Joshua Murillo took fifth in the pole vault (11-0). Wildcatz senior Ruben Mora took fifth in the 300 hurdles (43.29) and junior teammate Patrick Miller-Brown took sixth (43.36).
MVC senior Connor Pallott took sixth in the 200 (23.05), and the Mustangs’ Patrick Tracey, Trent Hendricks, Boston Ashe, and Pallott took sixth in the 4×100 relay (44.55).
High school baseball
At Harbor 5, Aptos 0: Winning pitcher Jaxson Hoye threw a complete-game five-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk in the Pirates’ SCCAL win Friday. He also induced two double plays.
Carlos Cruz had three hits, two doubles, one RBI, and scored two runs. Jake Fiorenza had a hit, four stolen bases, and scored a run. Pierce Fanara hit an RBI triple, and Travis Madden had two hits.
Losing pitcher Jason Yager gave up four runs and six hits over five innings. He struck out seven batters and walked five.
Aptos’ Cole McGillicuddy had two hits with a double and stolen base. Jorden Espinoza had a double and stolen base.
Aptos (11-9-1, 9-3-1) plays at Bellarmine on Saturday at noon and hosts Santa Cruz on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Harbor (14-10-1, 5-8) plays at Soquel on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Scotts Valley 13, at Soquel 0: Loyola Marymount committed junior shortstop Kaleb Wing had three hits, two RBI, and scored twice in the Falcons’ SCCAL win Friday.
The Falcons finished with 15 hits. Jack Abel had two of the Falcons’ six doubles and one RBI. Clayton Pryor, Jack Sanders and Blake LaRiviere each had two of hits and two RBI, and Jacob Pauka had two hits and one RBI.
Winning pitcher Colin Melrose threw five innings and worked out of two bases-loaded jams. Corbin Giesen pitched 2 innings of scoreless relief.
Scotts Valley hosts SLV on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
St. Francis 12, Pacific Grove 0: Nash Horton had three hits, including a double and triple, two RBI, and two runs scored in the Sharks’ PCAL Gabilan Division win Friday.
Micah Cervantes had two hits, two RBI, and scored twice. Donovan Dominguez had two hits, two RBI, and scored one run, and Nicholas Fantl and Derek Talavera each had a hit, one RBI, and scored twice.
Evan Dyer, Adrian Leon, and Pedro “Jr.” Ibarra threw a combined two-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks.
St. Francis (19-4, 16-3) plays at Palma (14-10, 11-8) on Monday at 4 p.m.
