Emunah Posner Minami, 14, is accompanied Friday by guitarist Peter Weiss-Penzias and other members of the Rock Shabbat Band as she sings “Give Me Away.” The ballad was written by Delaney Holland, her camp counselor at Camp Newman, a Jewish sleep-away camp near Santa Rosa. Emunah performs monthly with the band during Rock Shabbat services at Temple Beth El in Aptos, and Friday’s service was for “Rock Hashanah,” to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Rosh Hashanah, in Hebrew meaning “head of the year” is the celebration of the Jewish New Year and is commemorated with prayers, food and gatherings with friends and family. The 10-day High Holidays began with Rosh Hashana, which commenced Thursday at sunset and concludes with the completion of Yom Kippur Saturday at sunset. The period is also called the Days of Awe and is traditionally a period of celebration, reflection, repentance and renewal. Members of the Rock Shabbat Band who regularly play with Minami and Weiss-Penzias include Michael Levy, Shahir El-Shaieb, Paula Marcus, Shifra Weiss-Penzias and Stephen Vahle. The band has been bringing joyful music to worship at Temple Beth El since 2009.
