SANTA CRUZ — Chardonnay Sailing Charters’ Chardonnay II slides through the Monterey Bay past sunbathers on Main Beach with the end of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf at right. The sailing company was born in 1984 with the purchase of Chardonnay I, a Santa Cruz ‘50 designed by the celebrated yacht designer, Bill Lee. Lee, known to many as “The Wizard,” is one of the founders of the Santa Cruz school of boatbuilding and the designer of many famous racing yachts. In 1991, Chardonnay I was replaced by a larger Santa Cruz ‘70, the Chardonnay II which was also built by Lee. And then in 2015 the company added a second Santa Cruz ’70, the Chardonnay III.
