CAPITOLA — A series of partial overnight closures along Highway 1 from 41st Avenue to Soquel Drive will begin Sunday in order for crews to begin the next phase of construction on a major highway project, according to a release from Caltrans.
To provide workers with a safe buffer from traffic, the left lane in the northbound direction of the highway will be closed from 9 p.m. Sunday through 5 a.m. Monday. Similarly, the left lane in the southbound direction will shutter from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the same days. This pattern of closures will continue for five consecutive nights and last through early Friday morning, according to the release.
The overnight closures, which may cause delays of 10 minutes or less, will allow crews to widen the center median and construct concrete barriers.
Once the closures wrap up Friday morning, no more restrictions are expected through the end of next week.
The closures are in support of a project, led by the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission, that will establish bus-on-shoulder and auxiliary lanes from 41st Avenue to Soquel Drive as well as a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge at Chanticleer Avenue.
The roughly mile-long effort is expected to be completed late next year and is the first of a three-phase project that will establish similar highway facilities from Santa Cruz to Watsonville.
