An angler holds up a California halibut in the morning sun after reeling it in from a kayak on the Monterey Bay close to the mouth of the Santa Cruz Harbor. According to the Marine Species Portal of the state of California website, the largest reported length and weight for halibut are 60 inches and 72 pounds, although halibut greater than 45 inches are rare and these are usually females. Females grow faster and reach larger sizes than males. It takes about three to five years for halibut to reach the minimum legal-size limit of 22 inches and these fish weigh about 4 pounds.
